Upcycle Old Socks Into A Homemade Door Stop

One of the best things about the warmer weather is having the windows open in the house. The one downside of this, however, is the gusts of wind that cause the doors to slam shut. To avoid the loud and unexpected slamming, we turned an old pair of wool socks into a weighted door stop.

Here on the blog, it seems we have a little obsession with owls…and upcycling. From this repurposed cheese grater owl garden decor to this upcycled cereal box owl pinata; I can’t help but wonder what else we can make from stuff we already have in the house!

Materials Needed:

• Wool Socks
• Polyester Batting
• Uncooked beans or rice, 4-6 cups
• Fabric scissors
• Sewing machine and matching thread
• Scrap fabric, lightweight woven material
• Felt sheet in white
• Wood buttons, x2 (we used our driftwood buttons)

How to Make a Door Stop with Old Socks:

Cut two rectangular shapes out of a piece of scrap fabric, approximately 6” long x 4” wide.

Sew the sides of the rectangles together leaving one side unstitched. The rectangle needs to be large enough to hold the beans or rice inside. I ended up making two pouches for holding more beans afterwards.

Turn the piece inside out so the seam allowance flips to the inside.

Pour the uncooked beans or rice inside. 

Stitch the opening closed.

Cut the feet off the socks and discard the feet.

Cut along the length of the tube socks.

Open the cut tubes so they are flat and align the pieces with the right sides together.

Cut a “V” shape at the top of the socks as shown (make sure to cut the “V” at the cut edge of the tube).

Stitch along the sides to sew pieces together and stitch along the “V”.

Turn the stitched owl right side out. 

Fill with polyester batting.

Add the filled pouch to the bottom of the owl. 

Using a hand needle and thread stitch the bottom of the owl closed, enclosing the batting and bean pouch inside. 

Trace two large circles on to a sheet of felt. We used a large mason jar lid.

Cut the circles out and stitch the buttons into the center.

Hand sew the circle shapes (buttons) on to the felt owl.

What is it about doing laundry that causes socks to disappear? With so many lost sock pairs, I could probably make a homemade door stop for every room in my house!
