Earth Suncatcher Craft For Kids

You can make this full craft with recycled materials if you’d like – you will need recycled flat plastic instead of laminating sheets. And we love to save tissue paper from gifts – so keep your tissue paper because they make pretty suncatchers!

If you love recycled projects, check out my book – Fun and Easy Crafting with Recycled Materials. It has over 60 recycled crafts – everything from cardboard, paper rolls, egg cartons and more!

Supplies Needed To Make an Earth Suncatcher

  •  Clear Contact Paper  or Self-Adhesive Laminating Sheets
  • Note – to make this suncatcher out of all recycled materials you will need a flat piece of clear plastic (from a packaging you’ve received). • Double-Sided Tape or Sticky Adhesive Dots (for hanging)

How To Make An Earth Suncatcher

1. Cut up your tissue paper into small squares. We used a turquoise blue and a lime green. You can also find tissue paper that comes in pre-cut squares.

Save your tissue paper from gifts because you can re-use it to make any kind of suncatcher like these!

2. Print off the template. You can get the template at the bottom of the post.

You can also draw your own Earth template or have kids just add the tissue paper on in their own pattern.

Note: You’ll notice that the template is reversed. This is so that when you flip the suncatcher over to see your design it will be the correct way.

3. Next, add the self-laminating paper on top of the template with sticky side up.

You can also use Contact paper and cut it to the size of the template.

With the template underneath, kids can now use this as a guide to add their tissue paper in the shape of the Earth.

4. Start to add the tissue paper on the sticky laminating paper. Don’t worry if your tissue paper goes outside of the lines, this will get trimmed later.

Add the green to the areas where the continents are on the Earth.

Keep filling in these areas with green.

5. Now you can fill the remaining areas with the blue tissue paper.

6. Carefully lay another piece of contact paper or self-laminating paper on top of the tissue paper shape, sticky side down.

Slowly smooth it out to get rid of any creases or air bubbles.
