Even I’m surprised we haven’t yet shared a pine cone ornaments craft here on the blog! Today, we’re happy to share this fun and nature-inspired DIY for making pretty painted pinecone Christmas ornaments.
Making DIY Pinecone Ornaments
Typically we use standard pine cones for making crafts like these pinecone flowers for Halloween, pinecone roses and pinecone wall hanging but these Eastern white pine cones are actually my favorite types of pine cones. They are long and airy when open, almost resembling miniature Christmas trees.
I made several of these painted pinecone Christmas ornaments for my tree this year. I really love the pop of white texture that it brings to my very rustic and cozy Christmas tree.
These handmade ornaments are so much fun to make and will beautiful on your Christmas tree year-after-year. Or make a set of these festive Christmas ornaments to give as gifts to coworkers and neighbors.

Materials Needed:

- Eastern White Pine Cones (we sell this variety in our Etsy shop)
- DecoArt Americana Chalky Finish in Everlasting
- Paintbrush
- Twine, cut to 10” long
- Fresh greenery, 5’-7” long cuttings of juniper or cedar.
- Gold bells, medium sized or mini ball ornaments in silver
- Cutting of scrap fabric (we used black and white plaid flannel cut to 4” wide x 10” long)
How to Make Pine Cone Ornaments:
Paint the surface of the white pine pinecones using Chalky finish paint (or whatever water based acrylic paint you have on hand). Let the paint dry. Give it another coat if necessary.
Tie one pine cone to one sprig of greenery using the twine.
Wrap the scrap fabric ribbon around the same end and do a single knot.
Fold the scrap fabric ends to form a ribbon shape and secure with the twine.
Thread one Christmas ball ornament through the twine and knot it in place at the top of the pine cone ornament.
Knot the two ends of the twine together to form a loop for hanging the new ornament.
And the painted pinecone ornament is complete!
You can make as many as you want to add to your tree or to join all together and hang as a fresh and festive garland.

Painted Pinecone Christmas Ornaments
