Family Peter Pan Costume for Halloween

|

A family Peter Pan costume is a perfect idea for Halloween! Great for all ages or big groups, you can customize it so many different ways. Read on for an easy tutorial and links to all the supplies you’ll need.

When Henry was almost 2, it was the first Halloween where he could really tell us what he wanted to be. Somehow the stars aligned and he decided all on his own he wanted to be Peter Pan. I was over the moon!

We couldn’t decide for a long time what the rest of us were going to be (Ryan was going to be Hook and Maggie was going to be Tinkerbell right up until the last minute), but once we decided to all be the kids it came together really quickly.

I thought I’d share a quick outline of how to put together a family Peter Pan Halloween costume with Peter, Wendy, Michael, and John, because it’s such a slam dunk! Read on for our sources and tricks.

Choosing Peter Pan Costumes

We eventually chose to be Peter and the three kids (Wendy, John, and Michael) and base our costumes on the animated Disney film. But there are so many other amazing costume choices from Peter Pan!

Just to get your ideas flowing, a few other ideas: Tinkerbell, Hook, Smee, Lost Boys, Nana the Dog, Mr. and Mrs. Darling, Pirates, Mermaids. If you have a large family or a large group you can mix and match!

How to Make a Family Peter Pan Costume

There’s very little DIY to these costumes, and I love them because you can reuse lots of the pieces! Henry wore the leggings and moccasins in his normal wardrobe, Maggie used the pink jammies plenty, and we got lots of play time from the Peter hat and dagger.

Down below you’ll find links to all costume pieces that we used. For the post part, they’re every day clothes and don’t involve any sewing, cutting, or DIY.

The pieces that we actually did DIY were Peters hat, dagger, and shirt. And it’s all super simple!

Peter’s DIY Costume Pieces

  1. I used this pattern to sew a Peter Pan hat. Instead of the pipe cleaner in the feather, I used jewelry wire and it worked great!
  2. Get a green polo (linked below) and size up by at least 2 sizes. Cut the bottom of the shirt and the sleeves in a zigzag pattern. Get the leggings in a snug fit; let the polo fall over the leggings and belt the shirt.
  3. Next, create the dagger. You’ll need craft foam in gray and brown. Draw a small dagger (I did this freehand) on the silver foam. Cut this out. Trace the hilt and handle onto brown foam and cut out. Trace the blade onto more gray foam and cut out. Then glue the additional cut pieces onto the original dagger. This creates a thicker, more sturdy dagger to hold on to. It also slides nicely into a belt as a place to hold it.

Where to Get Other Costume PIeces

See below for links to Wendy, Michael, John, and Peter costumes! If you don’t want to DIY the dagger, there’s a link to a foam one below.

PETER
Felt hat made from this pattern | Green polo | Green leggings | Brown belt | Moccasins | Foam dagger

WENDY
Nightgown | Blue slippers

MICHAEL
Gray night shirt | Top hat | Stick umbrella

JOHN
Pink jammies | Teddy bear

For Wendy, a long blue nightgown and some blue slippers are about all you need. If the nightgown is too baggy, tie a blue ribbon around the waist.

Michael needs a gray or white nightshirt, a top hat, and an umbrella with a hook on the end. Ryan wore some shorts under his nightshirt because he wanted a little more coverage. 😉

Baby John is easy! Pink jammies are all you need. We had a little teddy bear that I stitched onto the front of the jammies so it always looked like Maggie was holding onto the teddy.

An Easy Group Halloween Costume

That’s it! A super simple family Peter Pan costume for Halloween that looks great all together but is totally comfy. This is one set of costumes that you could probably find lots of pieces for at a thrift store — just hunt around for similar-looking pieces and once you get them all together it’ll look cohesive. We had a great time putting this one together! xoxo
