DIY Skull Candles for Halloween

filed under

Last year I saw the prettiest skull candles from an Etsy seller in the UK. (That is a sentence I never thought I would say!) They were all the pastel colors and made the perfect addition to a pastel Halloween decor set up. While I can’t cast my own candles, I was able to find a way to recreate the look using craft store skeleton heads and and candle wax. These DIY skull candles for Halloween are the perfect combo of spooky and cute and make some fun smoke billows when extinguished.

What’s great about these skull candles is that they are great for beginner candle makers. I am still getting my feet wet in this whole arena, so using a vessel for the candle instead of trying to use a mold made the whole process so much easier. The only real difficult part is making sure you plug up any holes so that the wax stays inside the skull head.

Materials to make your own DIY Skull Candles for Halloween:

  • Hollow plastic skull head
  • Candle wax (soy, beeswax, etc..)
  • Wicks
  • Utility knife
  • Spray paint (I used the montana gold brand in lychee, pink pink, frosted strawberry, shrimp, and shrimp pastel) to spray paint these all the pastel colors)
  • Hot glue
  • Wax pitcher or other vessel to melt the wax in
  • Optional: Fragrance and colorant

Begin by spray painting the heads and then let dry. Once dry, use your utility knife to cut a 2″ in diameter opening at the top of the skull.

Next, hot glue closed any openings. These skulls had a hole in the bottom and two openings at the side where the jaw connected (which I completely forgot about until I started to pour by first candle. oops!). So be sure to check all around the skull and put a good amount of hot glue to seal up the holes so that the wax stays inside and doesn’t leak out.

Once that is complete, use a dab of hot glue to attach the wicks to the inside bottom of the skull.

Next, melt your wax in a double boiler and then pour the melted wax into the skull heads and let sit overnight until fully cooled.

Once the wax is cool, trim the wicks down to only an inch long. Your DIY skull candles for Halloween are ready to display along side your painted pumpkins and glass beaker flower vases for a truly spooky cute look!
