DIY Halloween Costumes: Flamingo Cape Costume for Kids

This year we are working to simplify all of our DIY Halloween costumes since we still aren’t sure in what capacity they will be used. And one way we are doing that is by making them out of capes! Solid capes are easy to come by at party and craft stores and come ready to decorate and turn into whatever creature, character or theme you can dream up! Plus, you can transform them easily without a sewing machine or any special skills!

The versatility and reliability of Fabric Creations Soft Fabric Ink came in super handy for the flamingo cape costume we are sharing today, because we used it to both dye the cape with a diluted portion of the ink, and we used it to hand paint the hat! The result was the perfect flamingo pink that made this costume pop!

Supplies needed to make a Flamingo Cape Costume

2 Blank canvas capes
White baseball cap
Fabric Creations Soft Fabric Ink in Hot Pink, Carnation, and Black
Squirt bottle
Water
1 roll pink tulle
1 pink feather boa
Hot glue gun + glue
Paint brush
Scissors

How to make a Flamingo Cape Costume

Watch the video, or follow the steps below!

Step 1: Mix the Hot Pink Fabric Creations with water at a ratio of 1:4. Shake well, until the ink and water are completely incorporated – if it is not thoroughly mixed, it will result in uneven dyeing. Apply the mixture to the capes and hat, covering the surfaces. Hang to dry overnight.

Step 2: Unroll some of the tulle, and fold it in half long-ways. Use hot glue to attach the tulle to each cape, from one edge of the cape to the other, gathering it every couple inches. Cut the tulle when you reach the edge, then start another row about 4 inches above the other, so the new row lays over the top of the row below it about 1 inch. Repeat with 4 rows of tulle on each cape.

Step 3: Cut the left tie off one cape, and the right tie off the other. Overlap the corners where the ties used to be, and use hot glue to attach them. Then use hot glue to attach the feather boa around the top, from one tie to the other. Cut the excess boa and set aside.

Step 4: Use the Carnation and Black Fabric Creations to paint the bill of the hat like a flamingo beak. Use the black to paint eyes on the hat. With the remaining feather boa, create a cluster of feathers on top of the hat and secure with hot glue.

That’s it! This is a simple project that packs a big punch! And I love that this flamingo cape costume can go over a t-shirt, sweatshirt, or even a coat (depending on the weather)!
