Making a Christmas Party Game with Upcycled Water Bottles

With Christmas just around the corner, I’ve already starting thinking about creative ways to keep my daughter busy (…and off the devices) during the school break. This water bottle bowling idea came to mind as one fun activity we could all do together during the holidays. Made with empty plastic water bottles along with a bit of paint and some felt scraps, this DIY Christmas game is also a fun upcycling craft.

These handmade ornaments are so much fun to make and will beautiful on your Christmas tree year-after-year. Or make a set of these festive Christmas ornaments to give as gifts to coworkers and neighbors.

This easy Christmas craft idea is also a fun way to spend an afternoon crafting with friends for the holiday season.

Instructions:

Working on one empty water bottle at a time, remove the lid and put it aside for safe keeping. Ensure the water bottle is completely dry inside before starting.

To Make the Santa:

Add a good amount of red paint to the inside of the bottle, enough to coat the inside of the bottle. Reattach the lid securely and gently shake the bottle until the inside of the bottle is completely coated in paint. It takes a bit of time for the paint to coat the inside of the bottle. Add more paint if needed.

Cut a long piece of black felt about 1” wide that is long enough to wrap around the water bottle.

Glue the black felt in place around the middle of the bottle.

Cut a piece of grey felt in the shape of a square with the center cut out to resemble a belt buckle. Glue the belt buckle on top of the black felt.

To Make the Snowman:

In the same way, add a good amount of white paint to the inside of another bottle. Reattach the lid securely and gently shake the bottle until the inside of the bottle is completely coated in paint.

Cut two circle shapes in black felt for the eyes and 6 more smaller circles for the mouth. Cut a triangular shape in orange felt for the carrot nose.

Glue the pieces on to the water bottle.

To Make the Elf:

In the same way, add a good amount of green paint to the inside of the last bottle. Reattach the lid securely and gently shake the bottle until the inside of the bottle is completely coated in paint.

Cut a long band in red felt about 2” wide and add a zig zag cut along one of the lengthwise edges.

Wrap this around the bottom of the bottle with the zig zag facing upward and glue in place.

Now that all three of my water bottles are done…

Let the bowling begin! My ‘too-cool-for-school’ tween said “mama, you’re such a nerd” with a big smile on her face as I showed her the bowling. I know she’ll get a kick out of playing this Christmas game over the holidays!
