Why Hack a Besta Unit?

The Besta tv units make a perfect project for hacking!

We used this one to create a windowseat in the middle of the built-in bookshelves. I love it because it provides a huge amount of storage but it’s pretty low-profile.

They’re also extremely versatile. They could serve as anything from a tv or media unit, to a windowseat like this, to a sideboard or buffet, and so much more.

They have a variety of sizes, lengths, heights, and fronts that make it a perfect opportunity for hacking.

How to Use This Idea In Your Own Home

While we used this idea in Maggie’s room, there are a ton of places you could use the DIY fluting idea in your home!

Try it in your living room on a sideboard, credenza, or tv stand.
Make the unit into a plant stand and place it in a dining area or bedroom.
Use the unit to store extra dishes and kitchen goods.
Place it in your workspace to hide printers or other machines.

Supplies You’ll Need

IKEA Besta TV Unit with Lappviken Doors. The Lappviken doors have a nice flat surface and a finish that allows wood glue to grip onto them. They’re also super affordable!

3/4″ Wood Half Round Trim. You can find long strips of this trim at your local hardware store and cut it down to size.

Wood Glue. We used Elmer’s Wood Glue Max (see the link).

Saw. We used a miter saw but you could use many different types of saw on this project.

Sandpaper. I always keep some of this sandpaper on hand to smooth out wood projects!

Measuring Tape. I like the self-locking variety.

Optional: Clamps. This set of quick-grip clamps is so handy to keep around! We’ve used them hundreds of times over the years.

How to Recreate this IKEA besta Hack

Let’s make it!

Start by measuring the height of your doors. This is the length you’ll cut your wood half rounds to.
Use a saw to cut your wood half rounds to this length. We used a simple hack for measuring the perfect length every time. Just clamp a piece of wood to your saw. Then clamp something to that piece of wood to act as a stopper at the exact length you need each piece to be. Butt each piece of wood up to the stopper before each cut and they’ll be the perfect length. Cut enough half rounds to cover the front of your IKEA Besta door entirely; do the same for each door.
Once cut, sand all the edges to remove sharp corners or splinters.
Lay down the one door from your IKEA Besta unit. Spread wood glue on the entire front surface.
One by one, lay down the wood rounds onto the wood glue. Once they’ve been laid all the way across, shift them as necessary to have equal space (if any) between them. We had very little space between our pieces.
Place another door or a piece of plywood on top of the fluting. Check underneath to ensure no wood pieces have moved. Place heavy weights or books on top of the stack to ensure the pieces stick to the door.
Once completely dry, remove the weight and repeat with the next door.
Mount your doors to your IKEA Besta unit and enjoy!
