Hello dear friends! Have you ever wondered how to paint a buffalo plaid pattern? Well today we’re sharing the step by step tutorial for painting buffalo plaid on a flat surface to make an upcycled framed piece of art for Fall and beyond.
Painting a Buffalo Plaid Check Pattern
Fall is in the air and with it comes splashes of buffalo plaid everywhere from fashion to home decor! A while back we made this super simple and cozy infinity scarf using a plaid flannel fabric which is time to pull out of the Winter storage tote.

I used a similar technique to paint mini terra cotta pots for my Fall three tiered tray.
Materials Needed

- Picture Frame
- Paint – Colours Optional (We used DecoArt Americana Chalky Paint in Everlasting and Carbon)
- Paint Brushes
- Painters Tape
- Hot Glue Gun
- Cricut Joy with printable peel and stick stock
- Preserved Leaves/Flowers

Remove the glass and backing from the picture frame and place the backing on a protected surface
How to Paint Buffalo Plaid Pattern
Using painters tape, tape the backing horizontally (we used the width of the painters tape for consistency).
We mixed the black and white paint to create a grey colour and applied the paint to the frame backer between the pieces of tape. Let the paint dry.
Remove the painters tape and then tape the frame vertically (we used the width of the painters tape for consistency).
Brush on the paint again between the verticals strips of tape and let dry.
Add back the tape over the same rows that you did originally (ie. the white rows).
Paint the exposed areas with black paint.
Remove the painters tape to reveal the buffalo check pattern.
There you go! Beautifully buffalo plaid canvas, all ready for decorating.
Adding the Cicut Cut Lettering
I used the buffalo plaid pattern to make a pretty fall sign with a cutout using my Cricut Joy.
Using the Circut Joy, cut out your own personalized Fall message or choose one from Design Space’s library.
Weed away the excess vinyl and using transfer tape, transfer the lettering on to the painted plaid pattern. Insert the backing back in to the frame and using a hot glue gun, glue preserved or faux leaves and flowers.
Place with your other Fall decor and enjoy!

How to Paint Buffalo Plaid Pattern
Materials
- Picture Frame
- 5×7 Painting Canvas
- Paint – Colours Optional We used DecoArt Americana Chalky Paint in Everlasting and Carbon
- Paint Brushes
- Painters Tape
- Hot Glue Gun
- Cricut Joy with printable peel and stick stock
- Preserved Leaves/Flowers
Instructions
- Remove the backing and glass from the picture frame.
- Using painters tape, tape off evenly spaced horizontal stripes onto a small canvas.
- Mix black and white paint to create a grey colour and paint the exposed rows of the canvas. Let the paint dry.
- Remove the painters tape and tape off evenly spaced columns on the canvas.
- Paint the exposed columns with the same gray paint. Let dry.
- Put back the rows of painters tape you previously removed, in the same spaces as before.
- Paint the exposed squares with black paint. Let dry and then remove the tape to reveal the buffalo plaid design.
- Using the Circut Joy, print out your own personalized fall message on adhesive vinyl.
- Apply the fall message to the buffalo check.
- Place the canvas into the frame.
- Using a hot glue gun, glue preserved leaves and flowers to the frame.
