Supplies You’ll Need to Make Yarn Pom Poms

This is a perfect DIY project to tackle while you’re watching your favorite movie or hanging out with friends, because only takes a few supplies (and very little focus!).

Here’s a linked list of what you’ll need:

How to Make a Pom Pom

  1. Begin by opening the pom pom maker and wrapping your yarn around both sides.  You can use just one solid color or choose several for each pom and just alternate the colors used when wrapping. If you’re using thick yarn like we did here, be careful not wrap so much that you can’t close the pom pom maker.
  2. Use your scissors to cut the yarn down the middle on each side, between the arms of the pom pom maker.
  3. Cut a 10″ piece of yarn, slip it between the two sides of the pom pom maker, and pull it taut around all the yarn. Tie a double knot around the center of the pom pom maker and open up the pom pom maker to get your pom pom out.
  4. You’ll be left with a scraggly looking pom pom that needs a haircut! Trim up your pom pom to form a nice and neat ball. Repeat steps 1-4 to make as many pom poms as you like.
  5. Next, if you’d like to add a leather hanger like we did, cut a 10″ strip of leather. Fold the leather in half and tie a loop at the halfway point.
  6. Separate the pompom down the middle and nestle the knot of the loop down into the yarn. Then pull the two loose ends of the leather around the sides of the pompom, moving the yarn out of the way as you go.
  7. Tie the two loose ends under the pom pom, creating a taut double knot. Trim any excess and fluff up the pom pom to hide the leather strings.

Tips for Using a Pom Pom Maker

Just a few tips if its your first time using a pom pom maker!

  • Before you begin, loosen up the arms and pull apart the two sides of the body a few times to soften all the joints. This also helps you understand more how the tool works.
  • Pom pom makers come in a variety of sizes, from teeny to extra large! Experiment with the size you need or like while you’re learning how to make a pom pom.
  • If you use a thinner or lighter weight yarn, you’ll need to wrap it more times around the arms of the maker. For thicker or heavier yarns, you’ll find that you won’t have as much space to wrap. Don’t overload the arms; this can cause the two sides of the maker to pull apart and you’ll be left with a tangly mess.
  • When you’re snipping the yarn between the two arms, I find that it’s best done with nice sharp scissors.
