Looking to add some personality to your patio without spending a fortune? Well we’ve got some creative DIY patio ideas on a budget including this customized planter idea using the Cricut Maker!

This is a sponsored conversation written by us on behalf of Cricut. The opinions and text are all our own.

A pair of navy blue planters staggered on the steps of the porch. The planters are filled with colorful flowers and have white decals on the front. One decal says welcome and the other has a house number.

Making Personalized Patio Planters with Cricut

A few years ago I bought a pair of inexpensive plastic planters from Amazon. I painted them using a lovely blue outdoor paint and simple floral stencil.

A bright blue planter with white stenciled flowers. They planter is overflowing with fresh pink flowers.
Before

The paint and design held up great (even through our wet Canadian winters). But I was ready for a change!

I actually never ended up finishing the second planter, so thought it was time to bring them together and add a budget-friendly update to my patio.

After repainting the planters I was able to quickly and easily add my house number along with a welcome sign to the plastic planters.

Head on down for the step-by-step project tutorial.

How To Personalize Patio Planters with Cricut:

Preparing the Planters

Give the planters 1-2 coats of outdoor paint in any color of your choosing. I used the same paint color as my front door and I love how good they look matching each other. If you’re reusing an old planter like us, then make sure to give the surface a wipe down to clean off any dirt and debris.

Let the paint dry fully between coats and before adding the vinyl decals.

Preparing the Design for Cutting

Open a blank canvas to create a new project in Design Space. Upload border image #M91D63DD and insert it onto the canvas.

Adjust the size of the border to 8” and duplicate the shape.

Add your house number on to the canvas with the text button. Change the font to Aphasia and increase the size to 2.5” high. Center the number inside the border.

Highlight the border with the number together and select attach to join pieces for cutting.

Add the word WELCOME on to the canvas with the text button. Change the font to Aphasia and increase the size to 2” high X 8” wide. Center the word inside the border.

Highlight the border with the word together and select attach to join pieces for cutting.

Change the colors to match the material color if desired.

Select Make It.

Cutting Vinyl with the Cricut Maker

Choose Premium Outdoor Vinyl from the list of material options and place the vinyl on top of the grip mat with the shiny side up. Press continue to cut out the design and unload when complete.

When finished, peel the vinyl off of the mat and using a weeder (or your fingers), remove the excess vinyl leaving just the design in place.

Assembling the Planters

Place a piece of transfer sheet overtop of the design and press down firmly, using your nail to help force the vinyl to stick to the transfer sheet.

Peel away the outdoor vinyl from the backing.

Center the vinyl decal onto the planter press it firmly down again. Carefully peel away the clear transfer sheet leaving behind only the design. Voila!

Don’t these planters look amazing on my front porch?

The navy and white add a much needed touch of sophistication. And I love that I was able to use items I had at home (or would be inexpensive to buy) to craft these planters.

Another nice thing about this craft is you can add the vinyl decal to the planters even after the fresh flowers and plants have been added. And if you like, you could add a completely different greeting to the other side!
