Back to School Stickers: Print then Cut with Cricut

Thanks to Cricut for sponsoring today’s post; all opinions are honestly my own.

After two not-so-normal school years, it can be a challenge to get kids excited about heading back to the classroom. One way to make back-to-school a little more fun is by letting students personalize and decorate their school supplies with custom stickers. With the help of a Cricut machine, they can choose all kinds of images to print, then cut into stickers that can be used on everything from binders, folders, and notebooks to pencil cups and lunchboxes. Plus, teachers can make their own encouraging stickers to use on graded papers and more. Here’s how to create your own Print then Cut Back to School Stickers.

You’ll need:

Cricut Explore or Maker electronic cutting machine

Cutting Mat

Printable Sticker Paper

Cricut Design Space – computer/laptop version

Ink Jet Printer

Step 1: Choose your image(s) and place them on a new canvas in Cricut Design Space.

*Note that the Print then Cut feature ONLY works with Design Space on a computer/laptop, NOT the phone app. If you’re like me and usually connect to your Cricut from your phone, you’ll need to switch to a computer for this project.*

One way to find great images is to search the ones available in Design Space. I used keywords like “school,” and the names of different classes, but you can also search for anything else you like…dogs, unicorns, sports, etc. You can even filter the results to show you images that are designed specifically as Print then Cut files. These will be the easiest kind of images to work with, because you don’t have to make any changes to them aside from sizing them to whatever dimensions you’d like your stickers to be.

If you find images you like that aren’t Print then Cut files, don’t worry, you can still use them to create your stickers; there are just a few more steps involved. First, insert the image onto your canvas. Then, select it in the layers menu. At the bottom of the screen, choose the flatten tool. This will make the image into one layer and change it to a Print then Cut format.

Another option for images is to upload your own. This can be a really fun way to create personal stickers, because you can use things like your school’s logo or mascot, or any other image you find online. The easiest images to work with are PNG files with a transparent background, but you can also use the tools in Design Space to remove a white or colored background if necessary. Choose “upload” on the left hand menu, then import your file. Then, select the “Print then Cut Image” option. Save your image and insert it onto your canvas, and it’s ready to use.

Step 2: Print your images.

Once all the images are on your canvas and sized the way you want them, choose “Make It.” You’ll be shown a screen like the one below, which is a preview for how your stickers will be laid out on the paper. Each page will have a black rectangle around the images. This is very important, because these are the guide lines the Cricut will use to help it know exactly where to cut.

Load your printer with Printable Sticker Paper, then follow the prompts in Design Space to send the images to the printer.

Your page should look something like the image below when it’s printed, complete with the black rectangle outline.

Step 3: Load the printed paper into your Cricut to cut around your stickers.

Make sure to line up your paper in the left hand corner of the cutting mat. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose your material, load the machine, and begin the cut. The first thing that will happen is that the machine will do a scan to locate the guide lines. Then, it will complete a “kiss cut,” meaning it will go around each image, precisely cutting the paper, but leaving the backing in tact so you can easily peel off your stickers.

Step 4: Decorate and personalize your school supplies!

Once your stickers are cut, all that’s left to do is peel them from their backing and use them in whatever ways you like!

These stickers are great for decorating folders, notebooks, binders, journals, and sketchbooks. Whether you use just one or many, they’re perfect for personalizing these supplies.

You can also use the stickers on other objects too, like a pencil holder, pencil box, and more.

These Print then Cut stickers are perfect for decoration, personalization, and self-expression. What kinds of designs and images would you create?

If you try this project, I’d love to see how your stickers turn out. Be sure to share your back-to-school project photos in the Amy Latta & Friends Facebook Group so we can all be inspired.
