Why Monthly Journaling?

At the start of each year, we’re all so energized and excited about the possibilities that lay ahead of us.

I love that feeling, and I bet you do too.

But what I don’t love is the whole “new year, new you” vibe that tends to float around the internet. The you that you are is more than enough, more than wonderful, more than worthy. You don’t need a new you.

But! What a new year can provide us with is the chance to get into the mindset of a fresh start. It can be really good for us to get into a headspace of being open to new possibilities, of being present, and of being intentional.

It also creates space for us to dream and grow. To look quietly inward and explore the genuine goals of our hearts, and to excavate our internal lives to discover what we truly want for ourselves.

So these Map My Month journaling pages are a chance to get into that mindset not just on January 1, but every month. They’re a way to keep that spacious feeling of presence and intention, all year long.

I love the idea of giving yourself an opportunity to reset.

It’s also an incredible opportunity to practice a little self care, and give yourself your full attention, even for just a bit.

Each month, on the 1st, I create and share a free downloadable guided worksheet. (You can download it at the end of the post.)

The monthly prompts will be the same, but we’ll focus on a different prompt each month and really dive deep on one of them. It’s a way to look at each question in a new way, and perhaps discover something you didn’t realize about yourself.

I’m so excited to see how our responses shift and change over the course of the year.

August’s Focus: Preparing for Challenges

In July’s Map My Month, we focused on foreseeing challenges. We examined the month ahead to identify where we may encounter bumps in the road, either literally or figuratively. It was an exercise in simply identifying paint points, without trying to fix or address the issues.

This month, we focus on preparing ourselves to meet those challenges.

As you work on your Map My Month worksheet this month, give a little extra thought to the portion that asks: Identify one way I could prepare myself for a challenge.

As you consider it, consider the challenges you have identified and what will best equip you to meet and overcome them.

Be aware that you’re not trying to fix, or avoid. Sometimes challenges need to be met. But we can do our best to arm ourselves with knowledge, skill, hard work, preparation, peace, compassion, openness, or many other tools. Consider which tools might best prepare you for the challenges you face this month.

There is no wrong answer, and remember that you’re doing this for you, and no one else. So jot down the things that make the most sense for you in this season.

Here’s what to do next. Find a quiet space for yourself, and get into a mindset of openness and possibility. Go through the rest of the prompts on the worksheet, using as much time as you need.

If you plan on participating in Map My Month each month, I suggest you get a binder or a folder to keep all of your worksheets in one place. You can look back at your progress and reference past months’ Maps to see how your year is progressing.

You could even add it to your Intention Blueprints binder if you did those last year!

Share Your Thoughts

Have you been following along with our Map My Month series? I’d love to know whether this is your first, or if you’ve been participating since January. Either way, I think there’s so much to gain from investing a little bit of time in yourself in this way.

Exercises like this can encourage us to think in new patterns or explore new ideas. It’s a simple way to bring some intention into your months and to really feel like you’re present in your own life, which is a good feeling.

Have fun! xoxo
