Who is Amanda Gorman

This fascinating young poet, born in Los Angeles and cum laude graduate from Harvard University, was tasked to write a poem about a country united. Inspired by the words of Abraham Lincoln, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and fellow Poet Laureates Richard Blanco and Elizabeth Alexander, Amanda Gorman dazzled America with her poem “The Hill We Climb”.

Daughter of a middle school teacher in Los Angeles, she began writing at an early age. She spent her time on the playground writing in journals. At 16, she was named Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles. While studying Sociology at Harvard, she was named Poet Laureate.

Her poem “The Hill We Climb” was painstakingly written as our country was reeling from a controversial election and an unthinkable riot at the Capital. Her words were to speak of national unity, and she accomplished this while speaking frankly about her ancestry. In the Hill We Climb she encourages us to, “lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another.” Beautiful indeed!
